TOKI POU TANGATA - "the adze which establishes man in authority" As a symbol of Maori authority and chiefly rank, the toki pou tangata were not used for actual work but exclusively for ceremonial occasions. This toki pou tangata has a long, dark green New Zealand nephrite jade blade (30.5cm x 11cm) with kowhaiwhai surface carving on the face. The haft (51cm in length) and base (56cm x 14cm) are ornately carved out of New Zealand kauri. The handle has 3 ancestral figures from the North, one large figure on the top of the haft, one on the underside which the blade is lashed to and one on the end. $3,500.00 |
